Briarwood Angus
Farms, Butler, Mo., Purchases the 2012 Angus Foundation Heifer Package for
$65,000
Proceeds from the sale
of SydGen Buena 9511 and her heifer calf, SydGen Foundation Buena, at the
National Western Stock Show benefit the Angus Foundation’s education, youth and
research endeavors.
Dr. Curtis and Ann Long of Briarwood Angus Farms, Butler, Mo., bid $65,000 on Jan. 11 to purchase the 2012 Angus Foundation Heifer, donated by Eddie and Connie Sydenstricker, owners of Sydenstricker Genetics of Mexico, Mo. More than $1.5 million has been raised from this Angus Foundation fundraising activity since its inception in 1980.
The heifer package was auctioned during the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo., with all proceeds benefiting the Angus Foundation, the not-for-profit affiliate of the American Angus Association® (AAA) that funds and supports programs involving education, youth and research for the Angus breed and agricultural industry.
This is the second year in a row that Briarwood Angus Farms has purchased the Angus Foundation Heifer Package. Last year, it purchased the package for $50,000. Omega Farms of Williamston, Mich., was the 2012 contending bidder, among other Angus breeders who bid on the package.
“One can only be humbled by the generosity of our Angus Foundation Heifer Package donors, Eddie and Connie Sydenstricker, and buyers, Curtis and Ann Long,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “Their charitable support, as with that of all of our generous supporters during the year through the wide array of fundraising activities we offer, is genuinely appreciated as every dollar our organization invests in education, youth and research for the benefit of the Angus breed can be traced back to a contribution to the Angus Foundation.”
As an added bonus to this year’s Angus Foundation Heifer Package, the heifer calf carried a special incentive for purchase. At the 2011 Angus Foundation Supporter Recognition Event in Louisville, Ky., AAA registration No. 17 million was purchased for $10,000 by David and Mary Ann McMahon, of Belle Point Ranch, Lavaca, Ark. McMahon, an enthusiastic supporter of the Angus Foundation, generously donated the elite registration number to the heifer calf.
SydGen Buena 9511 sold bred to SydGen Googol, the $25,000 top-selling bull of the 2011 SydGen production sale. The maternal brother to the popular docility leader SydGen CC&7 is sired by one of the breed’s top $B sires, DAAR Infinity 313.
In addition to the cow-calf pair, Briarwood Angus Farms will receive 30 days of free insurance from American Live Stock Insurance Co., Geneva, Ill.; free transportation to the buyer’s ranch provided by Lathrop Livestock Transportation, Dundee, Ill.; and an Advanced Reproductive Technology Package from Trans Ova Genetics, Sioux Center, Iowa.
“I’d also like to extend a special thank you to American Live Stock Insurance, Lathrop Livestock Transportation and Trans Ova Genetics for the generous contributions they made to the successful sale of this year’s heifer package,” Jenkins says.
